Harlan had a respectable restaurant business. Then the interstate came through—several miles away—and took his customers. But Harlan also had a signature dish. He believed if he could sell the recipe, he could open a franchise. So he tried. And tried. And tried again. Before someone finally bought that recipe, Harlan had knocked on 1,009 restaurant doors.

The name “Harlan,” of course, gives it away. We’re talking about Colonel Harlan Sanders—and his now-famous recipe for Kentucky Fried Chicken.

This is Howard Butt Jr. of Laity Lodge with a life lesson: failures stop at the word “no.” Successful people stop—finally stop asking—when they get a “yes” … in the high calling of our daily work.
