TRANSCRIPT: As expected, the memo came listing new promotions. What wasn’t expected—for Bill, at least—was the name Janice. Janice?! She got the position he had so publicly pursued!
Bill charged into his boss’s office. “No one in this department worked for that job harder than I did,” he said. “Least of all Janice.” Bill’s boss had expected this meeting. “You’re right,” he said. “And while you campaigned for that job, Janice was doing her work.” This is Howard Butt, Jr., of Laity Lodge. A career plan is a good thing. Ascending the corporate ladder has its rewards. Remember, however, that today’s rung is just as important as the one above it. Job one is today’s job…in the high calling of our daily work.
