A tourist visited the bell tower of a great cathedral. From a distance, she had heard the bells’ glorious music. Inside the tower, instead of music, she heard a cacophony of clanging metal. Instead of beauty, she saw a sweaty man tugging and lunging at ropes.

Later, the woman heard a luminous sound in the distance—the cathedral bells. She thought of the man in the tower. Did he know how beautifully the bells sang across the valley?

This is Howard Butt Jr., of Laity Lodge. What a lesson on perspective; our daily toil is never separate from the distant beauty of its results. If you don’t have it now, someday you will have distance, and you won’t hear the noise—only the music—of the high calling of our daily work.

“Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.”— 1 Corinthians 13:12
