During election years, the 24-hour news cycle is bad news for me. I want to keep up with everything. As for the candidates: they can never let their guard down.

Besides public speeches, a candidate’s every statement, every gesture, every response is open season for reporters. Someone’s always there with a pencil, a camera, a tape recorder. Wow! What if our every word was fodder for world headlines? “Today’s top story: In Big Presentation, Joe Smith Fudges on Numbers.”

This is Howard Butt Jr. of Laity Lodge. In the Bible, Jesus tells us that one day, every word spoken in darkness will be heard from the rooftops. That’s a news broadcast worth keeping in mind … in the high calling of our daily work.

“What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs.”— Luke 12:3
