A schoolboy reporter named Charles Schnee once saw the great stage producer, Max Reinhardt, conduct a rehearsal. Instructing an actor, Reinhardt said: “Always act the part—and you can become whatever you wish to become!”

Later in his life, Schnee said: “I thought he was speaking only in terms of professional acting. But now I know that his words apply to any individual in any walk of life.”

This is Howard Butt Jr. of Laity Lodge. Charles Schnee learned from personal practice that while our thoughts influence our actions—our actions also influence our thoughts. And that is wonderful news. If I start today to act the part of the person I want to become—my heart and mind can soon match my habits … in the high calling of our daily work.

“As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.’ “— 1 Peter 1:14-16
