Can you imagine a pro athlete who would knowingly disqualify himself from a full year of competition? I’m thinking of a pro golfer who did just that: J. P. Hayes.

The Q-School is where golfers qualify to play on the PGA tour. In a qualifying round—on only one hole—J. P. unknowingly played a nonapproved ball. A day later, he realized the error. He called an official and turned himself in. That admission disqualified him from a year’s PGA earnings.

This is Howard Butt Jr. of Laity Lodge. J. P. Hayes could have hidden his mistake … or blamed the caddy. Instead, though it cost him, he did the right thing. That kind of hard decision, well made, is the high calling of our daily work.

to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.”— Proverbs 22:1
