Outdoor School hosted 16 schools, serving a total of 1,608 students this year.

You can’t properly tell the story of outdoor education in the Canyon—or in the state of Texas—without talking about Irma Lewis, a P.E. teacher from Seguin.

Outdoor School, our youngest program in the Canyon, has hit its stride. 2017 was an exciting season of change and growth, with new faces, new facilities, and new offerings.

Dan Roloff has witnessed tremendous transformation in the organization since the 1980s. The quintessential oral historian of the Canyon’s best tales, “Ramblin’ Dan,” as he was sometimes known around the Canyon, retired on March 28.

H. E. Butt Foundation staff work with educators to create hands-on learning opportunities and recreational activities to foster self-esteem and leadership skills.

Outdoor School uses only the best equipment and conducts monthly inspections on cabling, bolts, anchors, ropes, poles, and participant equipment such as harnesses and helmets. Ask campers what makes them feel safe, though, and you won’t hear about the equipment. You’ll hear about the counselors.

We are super excited to be breaking ground this spring on a brand-new family hike & bike trail by the fine folks at Dirt Dojo at (wait for it…) Headwaters!

Most anyone can sign up to be an Outdoor School Volunteer. All that’s required to apply is the willingness to try.
