2024 Camp Trends

CAMP TRENDS

Words by Alyson Amestoy

As the campers and counselors drive into the Canyon, they don’t just carry their luggage. They carry the new trends of the summer. Out of all the trends, whether it’s new fashion, new lingo, or new running gags, these stand out from a wholesome LLYC summer.

“WHAT IS THIS? A McDONALD’S?!”

”A camp trend this summer is the counselors telling the kids that the ICEE machine is broken,” said one Singing Hills camper. Unfortunately for Singing Hills campers, the ICEE machine was down for most of the summer. “I was like, ‘What is this? A McDonald‘s?’” explained the Singing Hills camper. Because honestly, is it summer without a Blue Raspberry ICEE?

“WHAT THE SIGMA?!”

It’s a new camper phrase that has many meanings, depending on who you’re talking to. For some counselors, it is a ranking system of whether a counselor has sigma. For LLYC Media bosses, it is a phrase used in reaction to an event. For Echo Valley Director Mike Mrosko, it is a mystery. “I don’t even know ‘what’s the sigma.’ And they don’t know either. That’s the thing,” Mike said. “They don’t know the Greek symbol; they don’t know the math symbol!” If you desire answers, you’re not going to find them. Just accept it, shrug, and say, “What the sigma?”

Wholesome Trends

These are the trends that make you say, “Awwwwww! ”Fly fishing is back at Singing Hills. “The kids are out there at Crazy Horse just ripping lips,” said Lukas Silvius, the activity coordinator at Singing Hills. Another trend—designated T-Shirt days for Echo Valley counselors like Wolf Shirt Wednesday, Cultivate Thursday, Aggie Friday, and Caturday. One Singing Hills camper said his favorite trend was “making new friends.” Silvius revealed the best trend of all this summer: “Following God, loving others, and
being the best kind of person you can be.”

“BUTTER NIGHT!”

Samuel Skaggs is the appointed CEO of Butter Night, the second half running gag at Echo Valley amongst counselors. “Butter Night is tomorrow night! Leave your drama at the door!” We don’t have any more information to give you, except that it’s tomorrow night.
