The Unique Challenges of Rural America

The H. E. Butt Foundation is one of the largest private employers in Leakey, Texas—a small town in Real County—just down Highway 83 from our property in the Frio River Canyon. The town and its outlying areas have their own way of life, with a unique pace, identity, and set of assets. Rural living can be complex in ways that are overlooked and underappreciated, and there are too few services to meet the needs of the community, including physical and mental health resources.

Supporting Children and Families

We provide a convening space in Leakey, Texas for nonprofits and service agencies to use free of charge to offer services, collaborate, promote, and disseminate resources to families in the area. Some of our partners include Hill Country MHDD, Community Council of South-Central Texas, Bluebonnet Children’s Advocacy Center, Keep It Real Beautiful, and Leakey Independent School District.

Developing Local Leadership

In partnership with Hill Country Alliance and the Texas A&M Texas Rural Leadership Program, we collaborate to provide leadership learning and networking opportunities for the community through local workshops and programs. Along with a regional steering committee, our program—Leading in the Rural Hill Country—serves hundreds of rural hill country leaders.

Navigating Rural Life

We inform the community about services available to them, and we build capacity through ongoing training and design processes. We serve as the backbone for Team Real County, an inter-agency group of Real County service agencies, including human services as well as faith-based, civic, and educational agencies, providing an opportunity for agencies to learn more about each other and ways to serve.
